“Mommy, What’s
‘Died’?” The Butterfly Story
By:
Linda Gill
Available in two
versions
These two unique books
have been designed for children from pre-kindergarten through 4th
grade. Each book contains
the same heartwarming, sensitive, colorfully-illustrated story about
death, grief, loss, and joyful memories.
The story traces Little Dave’s experiences following the death
of his grandfather. As he
learns about the birth of a beautiful butterfly, Little Dave gains a new
understanding about death and loss that is free from fear and worry.
Both books include discussion questions for each page of the
story to encourage children to interact with a parent or other trusted
adult about their perceptions and feelings.
The Children’s
Storybook includes the full-color
story with discussion questions only. It
makes a wonderful gift for families with children who have experienced
the death of a loved one.

The Extended Version of the book is also full-color and is
intended for professionals (counselors, social workers, teachers, child
care workers, pastors, medical and nursing professionals) who would like
a more in-depth resource. It
includes 40 additional pages of activities, story extensions, and
cultural/belief variations to assist professionals as they support the
grief processes of children from various cultural and religious
backgrounds. The Activities
section can be used to help children explore their feelings.
The Extensions section provides examples of ways to adapt
and extend the story for children from different cultural and religious
backgrounds. The Belief
Variations section provides information to help professionals become
more knowledgeable and sensitive to different beliefs, customs, and
rituals related to death from different cultural and religious
perspectives.

About
“Joy in the Mourning”®
“Joy in
the Mourning”®
was founded by Linda Gill in 1996. The
purpose of “Joy in the Mourning”® is to
provide grief counseling services, support groups, and resources to
assist individuals and families toward healing through the process of
mourning their losses. Losses
are a part of life. The
aftermath of a significant loss, particularly a death, can affect
personal relationships, sometimes disrupting them in unhealthy or
painful ways. Marriages and
parent-child relationships can suffer.
Friendships can be affected.
Even an individual's professional life can be affected because of
the mental and emotional exhaustion associated with normal grief.
The service mark, “Joy
in the Mourning”® was inspired by an
ancient psalm which has been adapted to assert that “weeping may
endure through the long night of sorrow, but joy will return in the
mourning.” The goal of “Joy
in the Mourning”® is to help people mourn in
healthy ways that bring them back to the joy of life.
The sun and clouds logo
graphically represents the process of recovery from grief.
The sun is partially obscured by silver-lined clouds with golden
rays of light breaking through them.
The clouds obscuring the sun represent the sadness of grief
shrouding the joy of life. The
silver outlines of the clouds represent hope for the future.
The rays breaking through the clouds represent the way in which
healthy mourning allows those who have experienced a loss to experience
joy once again.
